What is Cryptorchidism?

Cryptorchidism is the absence of one or both testes from the scrotum. The word is from the Greek κρυπτ?ς, kryptos, meaning hidden, and ?ρχις, orchis, meaning testicle. It is the most common birth defect of the male genital tract. Sometimes the word monorchid is used as well to refer to the absence of one testicle from the scrotum.

The localization of the testicle can vary: it can be in the abdomen or just before the scrotum or in the inguinal area.

In theory, the testes should be in place within the scrotum by 30 to 40 days following birth. There are differences in certain breeds and also individuals so the definite diagnosis will only be validated after 6 months of age.

Are some breeds more affected than others ?

There are predisposed breeds such as the Persian and associated breeds.

There is a hereditary component to this defect, so it is highly advised to not breed animals that are carriers.

Does cryptorchidism has consequences ?

Cryptorchid animals with bilateral onset are usually sterile, because the testes located intra- abdominally are not able to produce functional spermatozoa. Pets affected only on one side can be fertile but birth defects are more common.

Complications are linked to the risk of tumor growth and also the higher risk of testicular torsion.

Is there a treatment?

The treatment is surgical and consists of removing the teste(s) involved by neuter.
