During my fourth year of vet school, I had the pleasure of spending 2 weeks at County Line for an externship. The staff was so welcoming and helpful, they immediately calmed my nerves and made me feel included. Dr. Fowler as well as the associate veterinarians were happy to answer questions and fostered learning through doing. I was able to get valuable clinical experience such as scrubbing in on a bladder stone removal, performing an aural hematoma surgery, and canine neuter while under their encouraging guidance. I was also able to participate in the day to day of client education, physical examinations and interpreting diagnostics. Definitely a great place to externship to foster putting all that knowledge into clinical practice!

I did a 2 week long externship at County Line Veterinary Clinic during my fourth year of veterinary school. I truly feel that this externship was the best rotation throughout my entire fourth year. I was able to stay with Dr. Fowler and her husband at their house during my externship which was a huge help coming from an out-of-state school. At this clinic, the entire staff treated me like a doctor and allowed me to learn in such an accepting environment. I was able to manage patients as the lead doctor and given the time to think through cases as I needed. I was also given my own portion of the schedule each day to learn how to go through scheduled appointments, drop offs, and surgeries. In surgery I was able to perform spays and neuters on animals from a local rescue and laceration repairs on a few animals that needed it. CLVC also has an added physical therapy component (my favorite part) which allowed me to think of treatment plans for orthopedic issues outside of the normal rest/NSAIDs/surgery regime. I was also given the unusual circumstance of managing a patient that was surrendered to the clinic. He was a feral cat with an abscessed foot that resulted in through and through puncture wounds, torn tendons in the paws, and limited mobility. I was able to treat him with both medications and physical therapy (shockwave therapy, laser therapy, stem gel, water therapy) to help him heal his paw. Everyone at this clinic was very willing to teach me what they knew and listen to any ideas I had on how to treat a patient. The staff at this clinic is incredible and it shows. They are a very efficient team and will cater your externship to YOUR goals. I believe this externship was the best thing I could have done for my confidence as a vet and I would absolutely recommend it to anyone looking to go into general practice!

I could honestly go on for pages about my time there because I loved it so much.

"My externship at County Line was an incredibly rewarding experience. This was my first 4th year rotation, so I was worried I would not be able to do much. However Dr. Fowler was okay with me taking on whatever I was comfortable with under her supervision or that of Dr. Dorris or Dr. Conway--including spays and even a hernia repair (partnered with Dr. Conway). There is a high volume of appointments, and the environment was fast-paced—something I had not experienced much before. There were times where it was tough work, but it definitely expanded my abilities. I even got some compliments from some of my following rotations due to the skills I developed during this externship."

“My experience at County Line Veterinary Clinic was definietly the one to beat! As a fourth year vet student I was able to get so much hands on experience. All of the doctors at County Line are so very nice and happy to share their wisdom and advice. During my time there, I was able to participate in many various surgeries, and not just your typical spay/neuter (although I got plenty of experience with those as well). They have a surgical laser that I was able to learn how to use and get proficient in! I was allowed to take responsibility of many drop off appointments each day and all of the doctors help you to create a treatment plan for each patient. Most valuable in my opinion is that I was allowed to talk to all of my patients clients from start to finish, which gained me so muchpreactice and later, confidence in my client communication skills. All of the staff at County Line are amazing and sweet. Dr. Fowler truly has a hand for teach and has a very generous heart. She provided housing throughout my time there, makes sure that food is available for all employees dueing crazy busy days, and truly tries to tailor the experience to what you wish to learn and get more experience in. I highly recommend any students looking for a clinic to fill an externship slot to look no further! Thank you to all of the County Line Team for your help and knowledge in my vet school journey!”
